The daycare people gave E Nilla wafers today.

He's ANA to milk and they were told not to feed him anything except what is in his lunch pail.

When we walked in to pick him up today from daycare I noticed his face was swollen and pink. (his face looked really fat) and his voice sounded weird so I thought he had been crying... until I noticed the empty napkin in front of where he was sitting and all the other kids eating cookies...

I asked if he had some and the worker was like "yea he ate a lot, he can have more"

"Do those have milk in them???"

"Oh, I dont know.. does he want more"

Umm yea they have milk in them and its on the box "contains milk, wheat, soy and egg"

Gave him benedryl and took him to the ER. but all they had to say was "That was a dangerous mistake, I'm sorry.."

They could have killed him! luckily his reaction wasnt severe enough and we got there right when he finished his cookies but the lady didnt even notice he was having a reaction.. im so angry thinking about if he had been given something like cheese crackers and had a full blown anaphylactic reaction she might not have even noticed until it was too late to do anything.

And any advice would be appreciated....

i know i would talk to the director of the facility and let them know my feelings, but i would also have a alternative packed for him, possibly the daycare could store for him...so that when other kids are enjoying a snack like that your little one can enjoy a snack as well and not feel left out.

but the head of the place needs to know the seriousness of the situation with his allergies.

He had crackers in his lunch pail.

It is plastered all over the damned room that he has a life threatening allergy. I actually specifically told this teacher the first day that milk could KILL him and that he wasnt to eat school provided meals and we were packing all his food

edit: just checked his lunch box... there was a bag of animal cookies in there that he can eat. there really isnt any excuse for them giving him cookies

Talk to the director of the daycare about it and if you don't get any satisfaction, move your child to a different daycare. Also, you should ask your doctor about an epi-pen and make sure the school has one just in case. My nephew is severely allergic to all nuts and when he was very young, another kid touched him with peanut butter on his hands. If they hadn't had the epi-pen, my nephew could very well have died.

Thanks guys.

The school has an epi-pen. I am most concerned about the fact that she didnt notice that he was having a reaction.

I'm going in tomorrow to talk to the director and I am also making a poster that says that he is NOT allowed to have anything that doesnt have his name on it, and also listing everything that they need to look for on labels (whey, butter, milk, etc..) in case someone does get a bug up their ass and decide to go against the dont feed the kid food we don't provide rule.

*sigh*

As sad as it is he's safer there tomorrow than he was yesterday now that they have had the crap scared out of them

People that don't have allergies (or don't have a friend/family member with them) don't stop to think, "Hey, I should check the contents of what I'm feeding this kid."

I myself am allergic to mushrooms (as well as molds, etc).

I get dirty looks from people if I ask if there's mushrooms in the food (one of the MANY reasons I don't eat out often) or what they used to make their sauce (gravy), or if I move my food around on my plate (looking for mushrooms).

My mother in law has slipped up and used a wok blend in my food, but I noticed the mushrooms right away and didn't eat them.

Put the fear of God into the daycare, IMO.

I have that problem with my son. He is allergic to peanuts, and I've had to get more than one teacher in trouble for letting him have whatever other parents bring to school. Sure there is a Twin-ject (Epi-pen with 2 injections) but thats besides the point. NOBODY should give a child any thing they MAY be allergic to, unless its a doctor.

I'd seriously make them pay for all of your son's medical bills and I'm sorry, but I'd get the person that was so oblivious of his allergy and his reaction to his allergy fired. May be harsh, but thats how *I* feel. I'm sorry, you don't take my child's life in your hands that way and expect to have no consequences.

Whatever you do, good luck and please keep us updated.
