Satch is a great talent - definitely the most "mellow" of that type of guitar style... and that is a very good thing, at times. I definitely prefer him to Vai - but will take a Warren Haynes over both of those guys...

Warren Haynes has a guitar tone that just makes me sob. Talk about a Gibson tone! Yeah! Nothing like a nice gibson through a good tube amp.
... and from the bizzare tone vault of useless info..
years ago (12 maybe?) I saw a band called "Candlebox" open for Rush. I really didnt know who they were at all, but was absolutely blown away by the guitar tone. So, I purchased their CD's the next day. While the CD's were "ok" to listen to, I found the guitarists tone to be VERY similar to Warrens. Ive been a fan of the Les Paul/Marshall tone for a long, long time. Took me 20+ years of playing before I was able to hve my own Les Paul/Marshall tone. I still get shivers when I gig, from the lush sound. No pedals, no effects... just a Les Paul, a Marshall Head/4x12 Cab, and a guitar patch cord. What else do you need? heh

In Warren's case, a Tremolo, and Octave Fuzz, and sometimes a delay
Yeah - I do love that tone. I use a smattering of effects - mostly slight modulation and a wee bit of delay - but as we both know, tone really comes from fingers on steel... Saw Warren three times last year and he never dissapoints...

I spent years forgetting that Candlebox ever existed, and you've ruined that for me. Bastard.

Your dieties of instrumental masturbation do nothing to impress me. All I see are fancy pants and a human arpeggiator. Technically they're all very good, but their technical abilities do nothing in the way of excusing their music's complete lack of an ability to create an emotional response. Give me a guy with 3 chords who sings it like he means it any day.
