Van Halen wasn't hair metal although one could argue that Eddie was inspirationally responsible for many of the hair metal guitarists that showed up in the 80s. I will never forget hearing Eruption for the first time in the late 70s. From that time on I wanted to play guitar. That one solo changed rock n' roll guitar for years to come.
As for Van Halen today, bleh. Not even a shadow of their former selves.
