Given the history of that band having problems sticking with a singer, I don't think Roth is at fault.

They'll never do anything over a long period of time with Roth fronting the band. They just don't seem to like each other much, even if they'd be making buckets of cash doing it.

The funny thing about that statement is that there is no comparison between some of those hair metal guitar players and the three chord, no-solo-playing, pogo-bouncing emo-wimps who sing "Boo hoo! The world hates me!" over and over again that I've heard in the past 10 years or so. Avenged Sevenfold is about the only major metal band to come out since the turn of the century with guitar playing that is good. Sure, those 80's bands look pretty silly looking back today, but the majority of those guys could actually play well.

You want some decent new metal? Mastodon, I'm not a fan, but I can recognize some talent.

Thanks for the tip!

I checked out some YouTube videos and they aren't really what I'm into.

I thought the drummer was very good and, IMO, is the one who really defines the band's style to a large extent. He plays some very cool, unique patterns that help them stand out a bit.

The guitar players are just okay. They did a nice dual harmony part on one of the songs but, other than that, seemed to be of the usual tuned down, power chord variety. I did appreciate that they had more old school tones though; that kind of sound can be accomplished only by turning up a tube amplifier very loud so that the power tubes and speakers distort rather than simply relying on preamp distortion. Playing Gibson guitars certainly helped in that respect as well.

The singer can sing - when he wants to. I checked out four videos and, in all but one, he was doing that overdone Cookie Monster voice thing that seems to be so popular today. In one song, he actually sang with a natural voice and, while not the greatest singer I've ever heard, sang well enough and had a unique style. IMO, he should spend more time singing like that rather than sounding like the other 50 Cookie Monster metal singers already out there.

Saw some recent shots of a post-rehab Eddie... he's looking good. Here's hoping it sticks...
