I'd love to know where you guys live, with helpful grocery staff and free tasting.

I get that at the local produce place I shop. I would NEVER get that kind of service at the grocery store, but this little mom and pop store is great about stuff like that. If you ask them what something is, they'll tell you and ask if you want to try it.

They also sell water coconuts. They'll take one in the back for you, hack off the top of the coconut, and bring it out with a straw so you can drink the coconut water while you shop.

It's a nifty little store and the prices, selection, and service are outstanding.

depends on the grocery store you shop at, and who is working. i work produce at Jewel...owned bu albertsons/supervalu. we are a mega chain of grocery stores. if you were to ask me or any of my co-workers if you can try an apple we would gladly cut it for you.

as long as what you are asking isnt ridiculous, we will usually help you. lots of people want their watermelons cut in half before they buy it, so the know how it looks. some of them want to taste it, so we slice a little bit off for them to try.

one of the good things about somebody wanting to try something like an apple is that we dont throw the rest away...we will cut it up and eat it.

Granny Smiths are the best for cooking IMO they are a sour apple if eaten raw but become heavenly sweeet when cooked.

Granny Smiths keep their texture when cooked and still have a bit of crunch which is why they are the superior cooker.

Anotherstormslayer brings up a good point. Not all apples that are good to eat raw make the best cooked apples.

The apple orchard here will be having their fall celebration soon and then we hope to get some honeycrisps as well. I love going there in the fall because you walk among the trees and they encourage you to pick an apple and taste it before deciding if you want more of that apple. You get to mix and match in your basket.
