How do you prepare it. I am having a few friends over for dinner and I think an asparagus side dish would go great. I'm looking for ideas on how to prepare it.

I like it steamed with butter but lots of people like to cover it in cheese sauce or white sauce and slivered almonds.

Steamed, or Roasted at 400degrees until they are slightly softened. Normally I spray them with olive oil spray and sprinkle with garlic salt before roasting.

I like to make a mayo dip for them. Different flavored mayo depending on what I am serving with them or with some lemon butter.

this is the only way I make it

I leave it on just long enough for the tips to get a bit crisp though so you have a crispy/soft thing going on

I do basically everything people have mentioned here, depending on my mood.

The key to good asparagus is to be sure you break off the woody stems. To do so, select an average size spear, place your thumb and forefinger just below the tip and do the same with the other hand at the other end of the spear. Bend the spear slightly until it snaps. Use that as an indicator of where to cut the rest of the spears. This helps ensure even cooking so you don't get mushy tips and hard stems. You might even consider using a vegetable peeler to peel the bottom portion of the stalks that are left, but that's up to you.

Lemon butter and garlic butter seem to go best with this veggie.

excellent, thanks for the tip. I think lemon butter will go pretty well with the rest of my foods. I don't have a grill (stupid apartment) so I have to find another way to prepare it. Seems like steaming or a few minutes in hot water is the way to go.

You can always use a grill pan or roast them in the oven. If you prep asparagus correctly, any cooking method (except boiling) turns out good.

This seems like a great excuse to buy a steamer
