Yes, with good service it is the polite thing to do. Besides, you wouldn't want to know stories I've heard about what they do to chronic non-tipper's drinks.

what is a drive-in car hop? u mean u park outside and they come deliver the food to you? like those chicks on rollerskates in the 70s movies? if its like that i would tip them...if it is just a drive thru i wouldn't. the sonic near me is just a drive thru.

but at Sonic - they don't offer an alternative to where you can pick up the food yourself; you either use the carhops or you eat elsewhere - i feel that if they choose this model then tipping is not required

Yes, but in real restaurants, the server is waiting on you for your full hour long (or more) stay. At somewhere like Sonic, they don't even take your order, only walk it 20 feet out to your car. Anything more than a dollar for that is ridiculous, but I don't even give them the dollar.
And as has been said, they're paid at least minimum wage, while servers in restaurants make $2.13 an hour.

yeah tipping in general is stupid. i avoid eating out/getting delivery just to avoid it. i like how in some countries it isn't even practiced. the only job that deserves tips is stripper maybe.

I tip wait staff at full-service restaurants (even a diner, anywhere that I have a personal waiter who introduces themselves when they take my order) but I never tip at fast food places. I always thought Sonic fell under the category of fast food. I don't tip there.
