ever see an incredible milk sale at the local grocerie?
and milk isn't cheap so you get as much as you can get and get it home and then think about what happens if it spoils in the fridge?

if you freeze milk, sometimes the fat seperates from the rest of it --- still drinkable, but not desirable

i've got the answer ... i have another fridge that i have set up in my garage, i had originally wanted to use it to lager beer and have adjusted the temperature until it stays between 34 and 37 degrees F

it turns out that this is just the right temperature to store milk, cold enough that it doesn't spoil and warm enough that it doesn't freeze.

i recently pulled out a gallon of milk that had a sell by date of 03 May 09 .... my wife bought it the day before its sell by date ... it was cold and delicious - just like the 5 other gallons she bought that day

just thought i would share, so next time you guys and gals run across an incredible milk sale, you can grab as much as you want knowing how to store it without ruining it

That's all well and good, but I won't drink milk past it's date. I just can't do it no matter how much it still tastes good (according to someone else that has tried it).

I don't get what the hang up is with sell by dates.

You can tell the MINUTE milk starts to go bad.

How do you think people back in the day knew when their milk was going bad ... the cows don't have dates on their utters.

Yeah the sell by date is NOT the same as a use-by date.

The trick to keeping milk fresh as long as possible is to keep it as cool as possible as long as possible.

Keep it in the back of the fridge. Don't keep the door open, trying to decide what you want to eat or drink. When you pull the milk out, use it and put it RIGHT back in! Don't put it on the table and let it sit there while you munch your cereal. It should spend as little time as possible in warm environments.

throwing good milk out because of an arbitrary date is like throwing money away

i know i can keep my milk fresh and tasty by keeping the temperature low ... so i do

We finish milk too quickly to worry about sell-by dates. We always buy two jugs a week and keep one in the back (our fridge is REALLY cold - the milk freezes). So we always have yummy fresh milk.

Milk rarely lasts longer than a week at our house, so it's not a big deal to me.

And I'd still rather be safe than sorry *shrug*

Having accidentally drank some spoiled milk before, I don't want to repeat the experience.

I used to have a fridge in my garage too. It turned out to be a bad idea since it froze up in the subzero weather we get here in Wisconsin.

We keep two gallons a time in our indoor fridge, it has a separate 'zone' for milk storage that keeps it as fresh as possible.
