The kitchen-aid set looks like a decent place to start. Get's me what seems to be a decent set of stainless steel, but it's cheap enough to replace with the top shelf stuff later on. On a tangent, any opinions on:

you can not ever go wrong w/ Henckels. they are very good.

I like triple layered stainless for most cooking but you also need a good 2 or 3 cast Iron for frying and I have a carbon steel Atlas 14" flat bottom wok for a the stove top that I could not live with out.

Echo top of the line triple clad is hard to beat $ to quality.

I also like glass lids for stock pots and such it makes it much easier to set the heat for a simmer and time things like beans.

I don't like non stick /shrug technics and tricks can suffice. For frying a sprinkle of salt in to the cast iron works just as well and proper heat control via the glass lids works wonders for a dutch oven or stock pot.
