I don't want to get in to one of my anti-Salvatore rants, but I would argue that all authors in Forgotten Realms are better than him. I certainly prefer Greenwood and Cunningham.
Both are great, but I love reading Salvatore's work.

I hope Drizzt dies in bed from a head cold at a nunnery while suffering from syphilis and having his panther eat his fingers off.
as for the Pern series I agree the sci-fi prequel was awesome.
