i can't decide if i want to start this. i know it's shocking that i've never read any of the pern books. or it's shocking to everyone i know irl based on the other stuff they see me read. i'm currently debating what book i'm in the mood for right now and was like i wonder if i'd like pern. it's so long though. the books could be short as hell though. i've never seen one irl. i can't remember if they're the same length as a typical dragonlance book or not.

The Pern books jump around thousands of years, so you are not entering in to something that is necessarily a huge investment. If you end up liking them there is a lot to read, but if you only sort of like them you won't feel compelled to keep reading.

I think they are good, but they are not one of my favorites. I tend to read one then put them down for a long time. I think McCaffrey tells a good story but she was never able to really capture me with suspense or a need to keep reading. Really, the first book can easily stand alone, it has an ending and it was a long time before I bothered to pick up book two.

Expect approximately 300 pages per book.

the only one of these i liked was the sci fi prequel where they landed on pern. i just never managed to get into the series. they're about average size, maybe 300-350 pages i guess.

have you done salvatore's forgotten realms books caolin? those are pretty good.

nope. i've not read many of the "classics" for fantasy. i had a HUGE gap of time where i didn't read anything so i'm kind of playing catch up on a lot of things.

if you try forgotten realms start with Exile.

and don't bother reading anything in forgotten realms not done by Salvatore. i think i found maybe one other little trilogy in FA not by him that was halfway decent but it seems like all the other authors i've tried in the FA setting have sucked.

I don't want to get in to one of my anti-Salvatore rants, but I would argue that all authors in Forgotten Realms are better than him. I certainly prefer Greenwood and Cunningham.

salvatore does seem to be a love him or hate him kinda guy.

i think the other trilogy i liked might have been cunningham.
