Robert Aspirin - The Myth Series (fun stuff)
Robert E Howard - Bran Mak Morn, Solomon Kane, Conan, etc
Mark Twain - Tom Sawyer or Huck Finn

The Percy Jackson series is actually geared towards kids about that age (9 or 10). We have it in our K-3 library, so there's nothing super scary in it. It's all based on mythology, so there are minotaurs and such in it, but it really is a great read. You might give you sister the first and let her preview it to be sure there isn't anything she finds too off the wall for him.

my sister doesn't read. she won't read first. she'll watch movies before he does though. i don't understand it.

I read a Gor book the other day, even I was offended. Ergo, I believe it is the perfect book for your nephew, assuming you want your sister to never speak to you again.

The problem with Gor books is that they're boring AND rather nasty all at the same time. The originals anyway.

Yeah, I ended up skimming the one I picked up. The writing isn't very impressive.

Piers Anthony writes some really pervy stuff supposedly (not the least of which involves pedophilia) and he is also a pretty boring author in my opinion. I read Xanth 1-2 and Incarnations of Immortality 1-3 before I couldn't stand him anymore.
I never really got to the perverted stuff I've heard about and I am glad that I haven't. I own 5 more of his books that I picked up at used book stores but I doubt I will ever be desperate enough to read them.
