he's reading harry potter right now and loves it. i know he'll probably like narnia but for the life of me, i can't think of another series to get him started on since he's only 10ish. (he could be 9. i really have no clue. i'm an awesome aunt.)

What about those Percy Jackson books that just became a movie franchise? I have no experience with the books, but they had to have done something right. The premise at least is interesting. I know Brandon Sanderson writes a children's series, again I haven't read it myself but I love his adult works.
When I was 6 I was reading Boxcar Children, when I was 7 I was reading Hardy Boys, by 10 I was reading Lord of the Rings- I suppose at 10 he would still enjoy the Hardy Boys books if he's not ready for hard fantasy.
He might be too young for authors like David Eddings, but he is the easiest fantasy author; Eddings himself said he wrote to get young people interested in fantasy.

i'm afraid to give him hard fantasy. i gave my other nephew the first dragonlance trilogy in kid book form (where they split the 3 books up into 6 books with huge font) and my sister chewed me out for like an hour because they didn't tone anything down in it. like i was supposed to know they didn't remove the flesh melting horrible death to khisanth scenes. god. it said for ages 9 and up! ffs.

You should have slapped her and told her to thank her God that you didn't give them Sword of Truth or some Piers Anthony.

I was reading comic books at that age lol
What about the Amber series by Roger Zelazny, that might be abit 'hard core' fantasy tho been awhile since I read it. Its pretty harmless tho... I think
Some others are:
Susan Dexter: The Winter Kings War trilogy. Great little trilogy
http://www.fantasticfiction.co.uk/d/susan-dexter/
Harry Harrison: Stainless Steel Rat books but really anything he writes is good sci fi
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/The_Stainless_Steel_Rat
Ursula K. LeGuin: Earthsea series
http://dannyreviews.com/h/Earthsea.html
Alan Dean Foster: The Spellsinger Series. Its really funny imo. Could be abit adult for him but worth checking out. Think of Narnia on crack
http://www.amazon.com/Spellsinger-Book-Alan-Dean-Foster/dp/0743498259
Kevin J. Anderson: Ive only read his Game trilogy & it was good.

Theres a few... not sure if your nephews old enough for some of them but its a start.

Honestly, that was when I first started reading Eddings (but I was also doing book reports on Stephen King's" Tommyknockers" and "The Stand" a year later) . I ate up the Belgariad. There really isn't anything too outrageous in it.

I hate to say this, but Eregon would probably be ok for that age. Also, the Harper Hall trilogy by Anne McKaffery.
*edit* Oh yeah, Ursula LeGuin's Earthsea series.

I feel amost the same way, but he's 9, he might like the crap. And I would seriously get him the harper hall trilogy by anne mckaffery. It's kind of the forerunner to the Dragons of Pern stuff.
