nook is on top. i'm pretty sure that when i'm done reading my ancient tome, it can double as a coffee table and possibly a boat.
the book is jonathan strange & mr norrel by susanne clarke.

As soon as I saw what book it was I began chuckling at your expense. That book gives me mixed emotions like none other. I think I posted some delirious opinions about it somewhere on this board.
I survived the pointless anecdotes, the worst opening 300 pages in the history of literature and the grating style and came out more or less regarding it as the most delightful, unique, poignant and worthwhile novel I have read in years.
Ohh, and if I were you I would just pirate the ebook version.

Actually, the ebook version might be unbearable. Half the book takes the form of footnotes.

After a few months of reading books in ebook format, I'd just like to say that I don't think I'll ever read an ebook again. Paper books for me thank you very much.

the ebook i downloaded for it has proper links in it, so it should (hopefully) have proper links to the footnotes. if it doesn't i might just buy it cuz there is no way in hell i'm reading the physical book.

Well, I just thought it would drive you to distraction accessing multiple footnotes every page.
The book really is preposterous.

I am the opposite. I love e-books so much I've actually picked up my reading habits. It is like reading books was exhausting to me and e-books are freeing. I've read 39 books in the last two months that I have had an e-reader.

as i have started to read this now, because i had to sit around for an hour at the doctor's office, i've realized that it's exactly like reading a book as narrated by a 95 year old at an old folks home. this bitch rambles about nothing and goes off on seemingly inconsequential tangents. i only managed to read like 20 pages in that hour because my brain kept wandering off. i was sitting there going i wonder what i should do for lunch. there are 18 tiles covering the ground in here. i shouldn't have worn this shirt. i forgot they use betadine before injections. god now it's going to get ruined. this is my favorite shirt. i wonder what my dog thinks about all day. *turn page* ... what did i just read? sigh.. *turn page back and reread page.* <insert 40 more random things> *turn page* GOD DAMMIT *turn page back* how the fk old is the bitch that wrote this. jesus christ let's meander about some more.  *open up discworld novel and read 100 pages in the remaining 20 minutes.*

it's going to take me FOREVER to read this. and thankfully the footnotes are all linked like they are for all the death gate books. i think there's more footnotes in death gate than there is actual story so i'm used to clicking a link and reading it, then going back to the story.

I average two books every three days and it took me twelve days to get through that abomination. I believe at least a week of that was the first 300 pages.
The upside is it picked up for me a great deal once it got to Jonathan Strange's sections.
