Beginning with the prequel. I have to say I hope this guys father writes better than he does.

So far I have no attachment to any of the characters and its getting to be to many to bother keeping track of. Maybe I should have just started with the original.

I can tell you right now your not likely to enjoy any of the books just by what little you've said in your post. Theres nothing wrong with the way the books are written they just don't appeal to some people and just by your description i can tell your going to be one of them because i've heard this exact same thing from people before. Theres a slim chance you might enjoy the original Dune novel, maybe even the first three, but i highly doubt your going to like any of the prequels or the fourth book onwards. For one, the Dune books have no main character to follow, its not the story of a person or a family but the story of the entire human race and your going to get the story from the perspective of a dozen or more key players in each book.

Theres a chance reading the original might change that and perk your interest in the prequels so i'd suggest dumping the prequel your on and giving the original a shot. If it doesn't hook you inside of the first 150 pages or so though your just not going to like the Dune books.

I've got it on audio so I'm just going to push through the prequel while I wait on Dresden's audio. If it gets better (and I see some potential), l'll pick up the rest after I finish Dresden.

Good to know about PoV, knowing that might change my expectations.

I am really big on characters and tend to dislike anything that isn't strongly character driven. That said, Dune was great and I really enjoyed it - though clearly not as much as a lot of others.

The rest of the books were not as good and I am not a fan beyond the first book.

House of Atreides, as I understood it, this was the first in chronological order.

yeah, theres two prequel trilogies though. one of them is something like 25-50 years prior to dune and the other is like 10,000 years prior to dune. its very possible that one isn't interesting for you because you haven't read dune since alot of what it does is answer questions and fill in backstory from dune.

That's how its reading. It doesn't feel like a stand alone story, rather a lot of the information sounds like it should have some meaning to me.

Its picking up though, I like the kid being hunted and fighting back. The Emperors son isn't that interesting but I'm expecting him to carry over to the original books.

yeah. i've never really thought about the reading order for them before i guess but in retrospect i think you really need to read Dune before any of the others, even the prequels. theres too much there that just doesn't have the same impact without the things you learn in Dune.

Read Dune, the second book, and perhaps the third one. After that, just walk away and be happy. Dune is a masterpiece, the prequels are squat compared to it and sadly, the series by Frank Herbert himself went downhill per book as well.
