i started the farseer trilogy |
because i've seen a lot of people mention it and i've never read it. i read the first book on my flight to hawaii and read bits of the second at night while there and on the flight home. i'm not finished with it yet, but i'm really enjoying it thus far. her systems of magic are interesting and i love the characters i'm supposed to and i love to hate regal and wallace. (as wallace is a slightly major character where i'm at in the second book.)
are hobb's other books this good?

Hobb is in my top five authors and I think her skills at writing a character driven story are among the best in the genre.
Her other books aren't technically as good just because the Farseer trilogy is easily her best work but that doesn't mean the other books aren't great. The Liveship books are good and generally well liked. I liked her Soldier's Son series but I know some people who liked her other books and hated Soldier's Son.
I haven't read the Rain Wilds books because the series isn't complete yet.

The Liveship books are in the same world but not part of the same story in any way, it takes place in the areas south of where the Farseer books take place; The Fool is a secondary character in them. The Rain Wilds books are an offshoot from the Liveship books.
The Soldier's Son books are a different world.

I bought and read the Assassin trilogy, and I'm never getting anything else by her 
NOT my style at all.

depressing story is depressing. i'm about 100 pages off the end of the 3rd book. i had to take a break from it cuz it was depressing the hell out of me.

I think Hobb's biggest flaw as an author is her third acts. I think the third act of every book falls apart and the third book of every trilogy is the weakest. They are fine from a character standpoint but her stories seem to really peter out.

Her characters are always great. Something about super depressing books puts me off sometimes though. But not always, I like Michael Moorcock's books for instance.
