And I am so glad that is done with. If I had to read another damn list of what someone was eating, I think I was gonna throw my damn Ipod across the room.

Honestly, I am trying to think of what actually advanced story wise. I am appalled that the writer who put out the first 3 books in this series could actually take 6 effing years to write that piece of crap. 6 years. ugh.

Thank god I torrented it. At least I didn't pay for that drivel.

(and no, I wouldn't have bought the book had I not torrented it. I use my library a lot, and the only time I buy books now is after I read them after checking them out from the library. If I feel the need to let the author know I liked their book by another sale then I purchase it. Which I have done quite a bit lately.)

I was disappointed with it as well. He expounded on the inane and glossed over the interesting.

The more you think about it the more awful it will be.

Unfortunately, I have already come to the conclusion. I am getting pissed at the time I spent reading it, since my reading time has dropped down almost nil.

This book had the same problem The Wise Man's Fear has I believe. Nothing....happens... Sure it appears things happen, but overall the story isnt moved forward in any way. We have Bran for example. Since what book one he has been looking for the three eye crow. Finally reaches him in this book and nothing happens. Daenarys also has problems. We know shes going to say screw it, release the dragons, but instead we have to go through so much for it to happen and the in betweens is just horrible.

Overall, a very sub par book without much meat to it.

I think it is way worse in ADWD than WMF. ADWD feels like a transition book where the author needs to line up storylines in order to continue and at the same time they feel the need to give characters where they have nothing interesting to write about a place in the book. It is reminiscent of WoT books 7 and 10 which were easily the worst in the series.

I think Martin's reliance on thriller grade cliff hangers is lazy at best and amateurish garbage at worst. I didn't read ADWD because it was good, engaging or interesting - I read it because I wanted to know what happens next. That is how James Patterson sells books to morons.

Not only do we get hundreds of pages of nothing, travel logs with Tyrion and obnoxious indecision with Daeneyris, but throughout all of that nothing happening there is zero character growth. Usually when your characters sit around not advancing the plot it is because they are developing their character. The characters in ADWD are the same people on page 1000 that they were on page 1 and they are also standing in the same place.

Then we have the horde of pointless characters all doing nothing. Asha and Theon are both only in the book so we can see what other characters without POVs are doing. The Dornish prince was a giant ridiculous waste of space, why did he even exist?

Jon is the only protagonist left in the book and he spent his half of the book doing a lot of nothing.

The whole book was filler that the author used to set up the rest of the story (I hope to God otherwise the next book is going to be worse).

I've noticed a general trend that series (books or otherwise) tend to get worse over time:

* AGoT and ASoS pt 1 and pt 2 where really rather good but the last few books disappoint.
* Books 2-4 of the Malazan Book of the fallen where awesome, all the rest disappointed.
* First two Dragonlance trilogies where good, the other books where trash
* First couple of Dune books are great, the rest can be skipped
* First Thomas Covenant trilogy was good, second was meh, the recent books are rubbish
* Origional starwars trilogy is way better than the prequels.

Anyone got any counter examples?

So, to summarize:

Wait until the series is finished before rereading books 1-4.
