Maybe because of salary and audition pieces? Even the agency that represents these narrators can be the reasons why they are hired.

Something I've noticed amongst all of its genre is that America really has no respect for voice actors. Even in things like anime and video games, it's always the same handful of people doing it and often they even have multiple parts in the same series.
Everything else from Disney cartoons to audio books seems to be dominated by semi-washed up actors and comedians that are roped in to the role instead of allowing real talent to grow in the profession. =\

So I was at the gym right, and everyone had told me audio books when working out are great - time flies, etc. So I got one of my thrashy vampire romance books in audio book format, one guy reading the whole thing.
There I am giving it loads on the treadmill, when the main vampire hero with the main girlie meet a team of evil vampires and this guy does the voices for all the characters. It was so bad, I actually fell off the treadmill and haven't tried an audio book since.
Though I did hear Stephen Fry reading Harry Potter is awesome.
