What books first excited you about your favorite genres and caused you to read more?
Two come to mind for me.
Raymond Feist: Magician. I read the AD&D stuff as a teen but the level 2 fantasy like Goodkind and Brooks really turned me off of the genre. It wasn't until I read Feist that I really got in to fantasy literature.
Kim Harrison: Dead Witch Walking. I read DWW roughly two years ago not even knowing that 'urban fantasy' existed and I have read ~250 books in the genre since then.
Honorable mention goes to Robert Heinlein: Starship Troopers. After I read that I read every book Heinlein wrote and then a few other authors like Scott Card, Herbert and Asimov. The only rub is that I didn't really stick with the sci-fi genre.

sword of shannara is prolly responsible for hooking me on fantasy although thats somewhat murky, it might have actually been something piers anthony that did it. could have been the first few xanth books.
the early vampire books by anne rice are likely responsible for my interest in the paranormal genre even though they came out long before it was really an established genre.
various early stephen king novels would be what hooked me on horror. i got hell from my 8th grade english teacher for reading the stand in his class. he shut up after i proved to him i'd already read all assigned reading and done the paperwork for them 
i can't really remember what my earliest sci fi was. i think it might have been piers anthonys split infinity although its half sci-fi and half fantasy.
historical fiction was likely clan of the cave bear.
i'm not a big mystery reader and i can't say anything has ever hooked me on mystery. closest i come is preston and child and some urban fantasy like dresden files and the hollows.

I read a collection called "The golden age of Science Fiction" when I was in grade school....and never looked back. I was a SciFi geek from that moment forward. My first heroes were Asimov and Heinlein.
I started reading fantasy novel in earnest in the 1980's after having fell in love with Lord of the Rings in the early 70's but having found nothing to equal them after that. I picked up "The colour of Magic" and was hooked forever. Terry Pratchett is god.

You know, as much as we disagree on some things, we really do have similar taste. Although I would but Heinlein as way, way above honorable mention. Grandmaster is the correct phrase.

Heinlein is my all time favorite author, I just don't think it applies to this topic as I was never a huge Sci-Fi reader beyond what he wrote.
One of my favorite quotes is from George RR Martin; paraphrased, 'If the Hugos gave an award for best author instead of best novel Heinlein would have won it every year from 1947 until his death'.

I played the Sierra Online game Betrayal of Krondor, and found out they were based on a series of books by Raymond E. Feist. Read Magician and haven't stopped reading fantasy since.

I read the Twilight series, and figured there had to be something better out there because the "idea" - or whatever - was awesome. I just looked up my ebooks.com account to see what the first one I bought was, and it was Be Still my Vampire Heart, by Kerrelyn Sparks. That series hooked me. After her I bought e-books almost every couple of days lol...Lara Adrian, Gena Showalter, Karen Chance, Kim Harrison, etc.
Which is funny, seeing that Kerrelyn Sparks' series was the first I bought, as I won her complete set autographed on eBay there a few months ago!

A Princess of Mars - Edgar Rice Burroughs got me hooked on Sci-Fi. I found it on my dad's bookshelf when I was about 8-9 years old. Either before or after Star Wars came out in the theaters.
The Hobbit and The Lord of the Rings - Fantasy. My dad read those books to my brothers and I when we were kids, about 8-9 years old.
