Warning it might be a bit spoilerish!

Not making excuses for Cameron because I am not a big fan of his type of moviemaking, but he has pretty much stated he intentionally takes elements from popular stories and synthesizes them into a basic structure he can build his worlds around. I think he even said in an article that he analyzed 8-10 common elements of the most successful movies of all time and used that as a basis to write The Terminator. It's definitely not a mindset that I relate to, but it's hard to argue with the results. This movie has a legit shot at topping the biggest film of all time... which, as everybody knows, was his last movie. So, even though the comparison is funny, he's essentially in on the joke. Maybe the joke is on the audience.

I think the joke is actually on the people whining about how he copies elements from other stories.

I don't think anybody is really whining about it. It's a legitimate criticism. Not everyone has the same tastes. However, not only does this movie have a shot at the box office record, it's got a shot at best picture. Now, like box office, the Oscars are not as important as they might seem to some- but the bottom line is if your last two movies have broken the bank and swept the biggest awards in your industry, that deserves major respect. As I have said multiple times, Cameron is not really my kind of director, but damn if the man doesn't know what he's doing.
edit- And I think a lot of people think that breaking records is just ho hum, because as ticket prices increase and time goes on, they're made to be broken. That's true to a certain extent, but even films that gross a ton of money aren't necessarily phenomenons. Transformers is not a phenomenon. Most big movies follow a pattern that the studio can predict. They flood the market with advertising, convince people to rush out to see it on the first weekend, and then chart the steady decline in attendance. It's like clockwork. After 8 days (Friday to Friday) they often know almost exactly how much a movie is going to make, even if it's in theaters for 2 months. It's the very definition of why box office is usually meaningless to everyone but the people raking in the cash.
Avatar has been out awhile now, and people still don't know the ceiling. I have read, using the same multipliers as Return of the King, the film could get to 680 million domestic. But it's more than the raw numbers. To create this type of buzz, where your movie is pretty much flatlining on weekends- attendance dropping 5-10 percent where most movies drop 50, and to do it with back to back movies, is just silly. Cameron's method of cannibalizing story details might be every bit as cold and calculated as a studio looking for a 1980's cartoon to turn into the next blockbuster, but one cannot deny he has found something that connects to his audience in a way those studio films don't.

It's not like I make fun of him for taking several popular ideas from others and putting them together.
I find it amazingly humorous that he took a single really old overused story that others have already done to death, but because he wrapped it in amazing animation, people call it the best movie ever. (The animation and graphics were good, the 3d itself was just ok)
It's like some of the things that come out of DC. You can get people to vote for a turd if there's an American flag wrapped around it.
