Just kidding  . Okay, I must say that I didn't really manage to get much of Doctor Who. The 200x version was shown only shortly on german television before it just disappeared -_-.
Alright, just for fun, can somebody give me a short explanation on just what makes Doctor Who so cool?
I know why Star Trek, Firefly etc is, but I have no connection to D-Who although I should have since I'm a scifi nerd actually . So, uh, toss me a bone why I should order dem dvds.

I'll answer that 
There are a number of reasons that all kinda work together. A lot of today's parents grew up watching Doctor Who in all it's cheesy goodness and are filled with a warm nostalgia and memories of hiding, terrified, behind the sofa. When the series was picked up again a few years ago, we watched it because of our memories and and we wanted to pass on our memories to our kids. What took it to the next level was excellent casting of the Doctor and his companion and some truly excellent stories.
When that Doctor (Christopher Eccelston) quit and David Tennant took over, the show sky-rocketed, he was perfectly cast and the there were more and more great stories that were mixed in perfectly with the corny charm of the 70's and 80's stories. The producer was obviously influenced by Joss Wheddon and made sure that the stories the writers were coming up with were as character driven and fun as Buffy and Firefly and there is always a deeper underlying plot running as a theme, even through the fluff episodes. His best writer, Stephen Moffat took over as producer last year along with a new doctor, who, whilst being excellent, isn't quite as charismatic as Tennant, so the viewing numbers have slumped quite a bit, Moffat seems to have really found his feet with this season so far though. All three aired episodes have been great and the first two were excellent and scary (for kids)
