Google has began to roll out it's new social networking service to a trial group, that is clearly aimed at competing with Facebook.
Google+ looks kinda interesting. Looks like Facebook, but you can assign your friends to different groups and be able to choose which groups your social updates go to. I think I like this. One thing about Facebook that causes me not to use it much is that my friends list has a variety of school friends, co-workers, family, other friends, internet friends. And I don't really want to geek out to everyone, haha.

They also have a neat little thing where you can create a video chat "hang out" and other people in your group can jump in whenever. |

Yeah, it might be a bit too much. So regular people may be put off by it.

Uhm, Facebook does too? Unless I'm misunderstanding you.
I have groups set up - coworkers, friends, "game" friends - and each group only sees the statuses (and pics, and links, and etc) that I choose.

I have groups set up - coworkers, friends, "game" friends - and each group only sees the statuses (and pics, and links, and etc) that I choose.
I was watching a podcast about Google+ after posting this. And I saw I was mistaken in thinking Facebook didn't have it, they talked about the two services. Groups in Facebook is a bit buried and not intuitive and I'm guessing I'm probably not alone in not even knowing the feature existed in Facebook. Google+ puts the feature much more to the forefront and makes it much more intuitive to use.
And my dang invite apparently got frozen, because too many invites got sent out. So they stopped the entire invite process temporarily. Doh.

If anybody wants an invite, just drop me a PM. I REALLY hope this takes off because I REALLY like the 'circle' nonsense and how simple everything is. Much cleaner than that FB nonsense.

Screw every one of these stupid social networking sites imo. I can't begin to explain how many people have given me crap all because I don't use Facebook. It has disgusted me to the point where I refuse to join a single one ever again. (I got a Myspace account just for music reasons.)

Even if someone sends out an invite, the people that get them still can't get in. We get this instead...

i snuck in before they caught the biggest loophole in getting an invite after they locked it down.

I got that too. There is a script floating around for Chrome that will automatically refresh the page for you until the profile creation area is unlocked. That is how I got in.
