ok so iphone1 comes out. buy it w/2-yr plan.
iphone2 is out a year later. buy it. you have 1yr on ur current plan and now extend for 2yrs = 3yrs
iphone3 ... 4yrs plan
iphone4 ... 5yrs plan
iphone5 ... 6yrs plan

do people really have contracts that long? sounds ridiculous!

I don't think the majority of people upgrade every year.

They don't keep adding years to your contract each time you do an early upgrade. You just start over with a new 2 year contract, so you'll never be on a contract longer than 2 years. Though in reality they almost never let you do an upgrade on contract after only 12 months, you normally have to wait 20 to 22 months.

I was getting upgrade offers from AT&T at about 6 months into my contract. I do have an old mans flip phone though which could explain why they would want to get me into a more profitable phone class.
