So my girlfriend had to update her graphics card in order to play Dead Island and I found out she only had a 300W PSU so I got her a new 520W PSU and a new graphics card that supposedly can play the game. I installed the new PSU and the new card just fine and then updated to the newest drivers and the game still won't run. The card is a Geforce GTX 460 and its running on driver version 285.62. The sound runs fine but there is no picture, just a black window. The Steam interface still works too. Any suggestions? Need more info? The rest of her PC specs meet the recommended requirements so I know it can't be that. Was I lied to and the 460 can't run Dead Island?

I'm guessing there is a driver or registry screw up and you need to purge out the bad data.

The card can run it. BTW, did you try older drivers prior to updating them?

What is the point of randomly trying older drivers with no info to suggest which would work? There's literally hundreds of different drivers so that would take forever.

She did try another card before this one that wasn't strong enough to run the game for sure so there is probably a few extra drivers installed that shouldn't be. What is the best way to check for old drivers hanging around and getting rid of them?

Also, would the onboard card's driver need to be removed as well?

ITs not that I want you to Randomly install various drivers. its that NVIDIA QUALITY ASSURANCE is a MYTH not a LEGEND. So, trying an older driver with same results means it ""might not"" be a driver issue and we should look at other running programs.

I do note that there are patches for the game, have you updated it?

Steam auto-updates games. It is in fact doing the same thing it did with the onboard card actually. I went into the BIOS and made sure the primary display slot was the pci-e slot though. We also know for a fact the card is working because it is running WoW at a steady 60 fps with everything on ultra. Her onboard can't do that.

After she gets home tonight we will wipe all the drivers from her machine and reinstall the most up-to-date one, unless someone would like to suggest an older driver that will for sure run Dead Island.

I'm running an older 460(768mb version) zotac card. using 266.58 drivers and had no problems running dead island. i did however from time to time have the game black screen and come back and if i alt-tabbed quick enough i got reports of "crashed but recovered" video drivers. however that was at release and i haven't played since then so cant tell you if that is fixed. but i would give the 266.58 a go.

Thanks for the driver suggestion. We haven't gotten around to working on it yet, too busy. I'll let you know if it works.
