Security theater.

We've done 2 effective things. Learned not to submit to hijacker demands, and put locks on cockpit doors. Everything else is just a waste of money.

Not totally on point, but incidentally that's way more dangerous.

On my last flight we had our bags checked at the gate as well, but I wouldn't even call it a search - just a peek inside. They didn't even check the side pockets at all.

I'm not sure what the point is, since if you really wanted to hide something it's perfectly possible given how careless they are about it. I had lip balm in my purse which I forgot about and I've seen women somehow get full makeup bags through. I suppose if you don't mind possibly getting your stuff tossed, you risk it and have a good chance of not getting caught. For the rest of us, it's just inconvenience.

Nobody has been saved by taking people's toothpaste and lipstick away. Even if a terrorist did have a dangerous item concealed as some common household liquid, if it gets found and tossed they're still free to go on their way (since to my knowledge they don't actually test the stuff) and they'll just try again next time.

less than a year till my dad retires
i can refrain from the arguments at family dinners as much as you all can refrain from ruining my dads government retirement.

whats really funny is he complains about true obama care (the socialist kind he campaigned on) and yet he loves that he has it.
