went through Lambert and the TSA was at the gate, right before we got on the plane, inspecting bags
i see no reason for this intrusion. maybe those dumbasses should have checked everything right the first time

It is a stupid waste of time, no doubt. Doing things that have no real effect but really just give the appearance of doing something....
Stoopid.
That said I'll be happy to review everyone's plans for safer air travel.

it actually made me feel less safe because the impression is that they do not, in fact, check everything when you go through security and have to bother you at the gate

Last summer when changing planes in Chicago I was physically searched, had my carry-on searched, and had to show ID again. All this without ever exiting the secured area.
No explanation was given. A few (5 or 6) other people near me were given the same treatment.
