SoCal has many different areas, and walks of life, to be sure. If you want the best taste that LA has to offer visitors, do this:
Visit Universal Studios for one solid day. It has tours of all the sites of famous movie filmings, amusement park rides, chances to meet actors, etc, and is not pretentious about who can come in and enjoy the sights. Do all the activities, and enjoy the Citywalk. You can have a fantastic time there enjoying Mummy Returns roller coaster ride, Jurassic park water ride, Terminator 2 in 3D, Waterworld live presentation, and did indoor skydiving in a wind tunnel. Not to mention other live shows and seasonal events.
If you don't like Universal Studios, the traffic getting there, and associated impressions about Angelinos in general, then LA is definitely not for you.
That is the single dumbest thing I have seen in my entire life. I've lived in L.A./Socal for 30 years, went to USC in the heart of L.A. and lived in at least 5 different parts of the L.A. basin. The idea that Universal represents L.A. is so hopelessly stupid that I wouldn't know where to begin. Universal is for tourists, real Angelenos ignore it entirely.
Go to Venice Beach. THAT is L.A. Go to Rodeo Drive. THAT is L.A. Go to the Santa Monica Pier. That is L.A. Go to Hollywood. That is L.A.
Universal my ass. I had a girlfriend who worked there once. As a VP no less. You couldn't get us/me in there for free.
Go to the places I mentioned. If the traffic is even an issue you're in the wrong city country boy.
