<2K in cash and only if you don't count your time in the evaluation.
I'm like Szerek - I had built all my own, just don't have time for it anymore.
That said, I recently purchased a pre-fab and it bricked on me last night - the machine I built 3 years ago is again sitting in it's place.

Actually being addicted to an MMO saves me money. It is when I am looking for a new game I tend to over spend on software and start wishing I had a new rig.
Plus Steam has really helped provide games for a lot cheaper. $300 in games would go a long way if you are just buying games that are on sale. $50 to $75 bucks could get you most of a publisher's catalog.

Computer Bismarck is a computer wargame developed and published by Strategic Simulations, Inc. (SSI) in 1980. The game is based on the last battle of the battleship Bismarck, in which British Armed Forces pursue the German Bismarck in 1941. It is SSI's first game, and features turn-based gameplay and two-dimensional graphics.
Man I miss SSI!

I started playing DAOC because I was spending 3-4 nights and $200 a week in the bar.
MMORPGs have saved me a ton of money over the years.

You've missed the fact that anyone just a bit more capable than a fleshy-headed-mutant can put together a reasonable gaming rig for $600 in parts from Newegg and assemble it themselves. Add in another $100 for a monitor, keyboard, mouse, and speakers, and you have a system that will last you 2 to 3 years or even longer depending on what sort of gaming performance you're looking for.
I have an $800 budget and I've not built one in years and I'm too far behind on the technology. Show me what you can do Jedi Master!
EDIT: I don't need monitor, keyboard, mouse, or speakers. Just the tower and its componenets!
I start here:

They show the best high end, middle, and budget hardware out there and it's kept pretty well up to date. I used this to put together my current system.

I pay $15 a month for my internet. My computer was $700 2 years ago and I have no intention of buying a new one soon. It also doubles as my source for TV, news, movies, and audiobooks that I download for work. Oh, and that word processor its pretty handy for writing my novels.
Its well worth the investment, especially considering I'd probably blow all that money at a bar if I wasn't gaming it up.

Gaming doesn't require a high-end PC anymore, nor does it require ongoing subscriptions. I've been gaming on the same laptop for about 2 years now. Most of the games I buy are on sale. I cleaned up these past few weeks with Steam's deals and picked up about 8 games between my wife and me for a total of about $80; most of them were this year's titles.
If you're a gaming enthusiast, you'll spend what you can on it, just like any other hobby. If I didn't have other expensive hobbies (and a family, and a mortgage), I'd probably still be spending $2000 or more a year on gaming. But I'd rather spend the money on something else and continue playing one of the 10 or so games already in my library that I haven't yet completed.

Internet access is expensive as hell out here in bum fark Egypt. I pay 160 bucks a month for cable, of course that includes TV (220 channels or some shit) and I haven't turned a TV on for more than 5 minutes in a year.
I have a number of computers in the house, but really only ever use a cheap ass laptop I paid 350 bucks for (new) 3 or 4 years ago. I don't build my own, I buy flashy ones that scream " ou paid too damn much" while they sit there looking all futuristic and glowing.
I find I have much more fun playing old games than new ones. I still play CIV III and put in hours on Rome Total War every week. My expensive machines sit there gathering dust while I stress this cheapo laptop to pieces playing games from a decade ago.
