It doesn't sound like your pal intended to be cruel to the animals, and I believe he thought they were rats and not squirrels. I might have taken the same route of using rat traps without realizing they were squirrels.
With that said though, there are other traps/methods to be used for squirrels - not only the "live traps" that will provide a higher likelihood of a quick, humane kill.
There were two squirrels in that video - only one of them got hit with the trap - how does your buddy know that both of them are still there? I'd be surprised if that one that got nailed was actually OK afterwards.
Killing animals quickly and humanely is one thing and I have little or no problem with it in legal hunting and legit vermin control scenarios - and sometimes the law makes it such that you have little or no choice in methods with "pest" animals and whatnot. It's just not the most comfortable thing to think about inflicting a lot of suffering that could otherwise be avoided.
