I doubt there are really any musicians who write better music because they get 10 million dollars for it instead of 1 million for it.
no but there may be more people trying or publishing, or publicizing because of the payoffs.

that's demonstrably false. the boss at my job makes millions and he works his butt off. nobody has ever wondered why. I am CONFIDENT that if he was just a worker he'd be far less committed.

I doubt there are any more people trying to be musicians because they could make 10 million bucks a year instead of 1 million bucks a year.
But you are probably right about the corporate side of things.

yeah but the corporate side of things pulls in the other side of things. You think no teens take basketball more seriously because of the NBA?

What if he made a billion a year? Do you think he would work even harder?
I don't think anyone disagrees money can be a motivating factor but the relationship has pretty serious diminishing returns above a certain threshhold.

yes and not only that but I think he'd have higher expectations of his workers as well.
I think the disconnect generally comes in when there is something to disconnect how well you do your job from the potential you can make. That's why I don't work nearly as hard as he does. If I do twice as well I don't even make twice as much. If he does twice as well he may make ten times as much. no matter how much you make if I offer you ten times more for ten percent more effort the vast majority of us would try to do it.

I just watched a documentary on Greek pottery and the artists making it. The claim was that they were all poor and no one really cared about the artwork besides the artists themselves who were very competitive.
When it comes to artists the motivation can be money for sure but there are other motivations at work that are very strong. Politics can be similar because of the power that is involved. State legislatures tend to pay the house members crap for example.
Many politicians are already wealthy.
Even Elvis supposedly got sick of just going after money and got interested in the music more late in his career. That might be BS but believable BS.

there is no doubt that there are tons of motivating factors outside of money, but that doesn't mean money isn't one. For the vast majority of people money is a key motivator if not they key motivator in how they perform work.

I am pretty sure this thread is the result of me suggesting in another thread that we shouldn't pay politicians less because there is already a shortage of talent.
