Economic pressure.
A year ago a 12 pack was floating around $3. Today it is just under $5.
Soda is not a necessity.
If it was cheap all those health conscious people would be right back on the dole.

Part of the agreement was they'd continue to sell real-sugar Dr. Pepper over most of Texas.
If Texans will pay the extra money, surely the rest of the country will too.
Hell, I used to pay 50 dollars of shipping on 200 cans to get Dublin Dr. Pepper shipped across the country. And I certainly wasn't alone.

I don't drink soda, haven't in years. I tried a Mt. Dew recently.....and almost threw up. People drink this shit because they want to? WTF? Like badly flavored battery acid.

Yep I dont like the taste of pop at all anymore either. I used to love Mountain Dew too and now it tastes really bad to me.
