Hawking's principle research includes quantum gravity which is sort of a sub-study or sub-specialization of quantum theory.
Incidentally, differentiating between a cosmologist and a quantum theorist is like differentiating between a microbiologist and a bacteriologist.

are you making some weird implication that quantum theory is a subset of cosmology? that's not even remotely correct. the equations are completely different. the theory is completely different. the fact that the two are so different has been the biggest hang-up of theoretical physics of the last 100 years.

I have it on good authority that some hippie died for my sins and now I can basically just do whatever the hell I want and then just point to him and he takes the blame for me.
It's awesome not to have to take the moral responsibility for my actions, and if it's really bad I can just go to one of his henchmen wave my hand in the air and I'm good to go again.
I love how twisted and demented religion really is..

Cosmology is the study of the universe as a whole.
The study of the universe as a whole is essentially reconciling what is observable with what we theorize (and very lately observe) on the quantum level and as it pertains to particle physics.
Hawking is a quantum theorist AND a cosmologist.
