We don't know. Could have just always been there. Although using "always" in that context is a bit odd since as we know it, time didn't exist before the Big Bang.

Well, not being a quantum physicist myself, but keeping in mind the concept that energy is never destroyed, I always imagined the implications of the "Big Bang" theory to be sort of a cyclic thing - BANG! - everything explodes, galaxies are formed, universe expanding until its own gravity causes it to contract again with those forces finally outweighing the momentum created by the initial explosion - contract contract contract - approach singularity - BANG again... and on and on... simplistic I suppose, but at least I can get my mind around that sort of.
