Wolves are beautiful and all, and the stuff of legend and whatnot. But they're also problematic when there are concerns with livestock and they ALSO take a heavy toll on the indigenous game species such as deer, elk, moose, etc.
Coyotes are also bad news in this respect and put considerable pressure on the deer populations in lots of areas.
A wolf that size is also more than readily able to kill a human.

If it was legal for him, in his area, to shoot the damn thing, then I'm fine with it.
I don't sport hunt and don't support it, but if some people enjoy it as a hobby, who am I to criticize.
I'll save my bullets/arrows for the more tasty critters...

There is also hunting that is actually beneficial overall to the ecosystem that doesn't bring "edible" meat to the table.
Example: coyotes. In Pennsylvania for example, you can kill coyotes all day every day except Sundays all year long as far as I know. They have a huge impact on the livestock and on the whitetail deer population.

The wolves in the area this was taken in are decimating the elk population..

Understood.
It's a lot like the feral hogs and coyotes in various parts of the US.

Yeah, and the elks are being killed at an alarming rate so they kind of had to open game on the wolves

Well I'm sure it's all interrelated to encroachment of humanity on habitat, possibly climate change, possibly over hunting, a whole litany of possible causes for things like that. Predator hunting has traditionally been a way to help try to balance things.
Don't get me wrong, I'm not in favor of outright cruelty. Dying instantly or over the course of 5 minutes when shot with a rifle is a damn sight less cruel than dying of starvation over a long winter when all the food is gone...

Okay. It makes a bit more sense in that situation, then. I have more to say about "control" hunting or whatever you want to call it, but there wouldn't be any point in having that discussion around here.

Control hunting is about making choices.
If people want to raise livestock and settle new areas that were once wilderness, and/or log areas that were once undisturbed timber, then there will be encroachment issues.
Most people who hunt understand that there are more than one side to the story.

You've obviously never owned cattle or sheep that have had wolves in their midst...
Or ever bothered to notice where your food comes from.
Or have a functional frontal lobe.
Thank you! I can't stand people that criticize other people for killing animals then afterwards head over to Sonny's BBQ and stuff their faces with ribs and pork sandwiches.
