Sweden for instance would face as many economic sanctions as I could find until it did something about its piracy issues. They are a free and sovereign nation totally within their rights to allow it but we are just as free to sanction them. I would most definitely invalidate any and all Swedish copyrights in the US making all of their contributions free for anyone in the US to copy and sell or use at not cost. That would go for any country that willingly allows copyright infringement.
Hmm, so does China have anything worth stealing, seeing as how they're always ripping off US patents and copyrights? Or are we just there to exploit their cheap labor, which won't be as cheap as their living standards improve?
Any debt owed china should be cancelled because of their patent theft.

I would have no issue punishing China in the same manner.

I'm sure that'd work out great."
And how many Swedish patents make money for Swedes? Trade balance might not mean a whole lot but us negating their patents on things like drugs or whatever would most certainly cost them huge sums.

Seriously dude, you've read one to many emo repub blogs about Pirate Bay.
TPB for instance isn't a major player anymore in file sharing, and hasn't been for years.
Sweden as a society stands for freedom, liberty and individual responsability.
That the government doesn't want to casually bend to American private interests (read=media companies), even though it's a small player in some respects on the world stage is a good thing.

Well the people creating the media deserve to get paid. No one is making you watch their movies, listen to their music or play their vdeo games.
Its not about freedom, its about theft.

You're definitely right, their products should get a chance to compete on the market and make a profit, that's a problem today with free unregulated filesharing.
Though that doesn't mean it's OK for knee-jerk laws to be made that filter and observe peoples communications and guarantee companies income many times over forever for media they had a hand in funding. Especially not by foreign private interests in the US, they have little to no jurisdiction here, for good reason.
It's something for courts to analyze, evaluate and decide, people who are interested in the big picture.

f*ck SOPA, f*ck PIPA.
SOPA/PIPA had nothing to do with the megaupload take-down.
The megaupload site(s) were offering direct downloads of current release films. Sorry, that's illegal - you don't even need DMCA since it was a pay site which made it slam-dunk pirating.
All of the crybabies out there seriously make me want to go on a shooting spree. If you want the movie farking pay for it. If you don't pay for it you're stealing it. If you steal and get caught you get in trouble. Accept that, or STFU already.

they remove content when asked. Tough shit. Youtube has copyrighted content on it too, and removes it when requested.
your argument is invalid

You would think people who run a large filesharing site would be smart enough not to talk about copyrighted material being allowed to stay on their site in emails.

I don't think anyone is contesting that fact; the issue is the heavy handed nature of corporate funded government action.
An individual downloading a film is committing a petty crime, and the punishment, if caught, should fit its petty nature. The government's actions are along the line of bombing a village to root out the thieves.
As previously stated, it is true that this is a crime; however, our government is spending way too much energy on this, and the reason is they are (at least) partially co-opted by corporate interests. Screw the corporations.
