A few of the easiest ways to explain why some advanced alien civilization hasn't already shown up and said hi are:

1. Faster than light travel just isn't possible.
2. No civilization has advanced far enough to discover FTL travel
3. The universe is so big, and intelligent life so rare, that we might never meet anyone else.
4. We are such screw ups that no one else even wants to say hello.

Of those possibilities the scariest is number 2, because if that one is true it probably means that civilizations always die before they get around to discovering it.

I think it's either 1 or 4 personally.

There could be plenty of FTL civilizations but because of 3 we'll still most likely never contact them.

Doesn't it seem likely that some other species already stripped our planet of every truly precious resource.

Uhm, no?

its people like you that nature didn't intend for....

Actually just the opposite. Nature will not tolerate the existence of a species that places anything or anyone above itself. Nature is the ultimate enforcer of "be selfish or be extinct". If you're not on board with that then please do the gene pool a favor and punch out now.

Besides - who gives a damn if we strip mine some lifeless atmosphere-less rock? I mean seriously who or what will ever miss it??

This is strikingly close to something I was going to say and is also the basic reason why I suspect that our type of life just might be not suited to truly long term survival.

There is nothing out there that could be any better than what we had here.

Nature needs to re-roll Earth. Maybe spec for intelligence and less for sex next time?

What if Earth was developed to serve as a food source for a large scale mining operation in this solar system by an alien species?

If you were going to travel a large distance in space to mine for a long period of time you'd need a steady nearby food source. Cultivating life on a planet, or taking advantage of developing life on a planet seems like a good way to supply a large amount of food for a long time.

Think about all the sacrifices offered up to "Gods" in the past. Maybe humanity was created to take care of the food.

If you can travel half-way across our galaxy even then you're far beyond the point where you need to "mine resources".

Right, because they'll build their ships and fuel them just by waving their arms around?
