Yeah, most politicans have their hypocritical moments, though some more than others.
I gotta say it sounds pretty bad to my ears and I haven't ever studied spanish, but that's a pretty raw mangling of the language to me.

Amateur mistake.
All he had to do was make sure that at the beginning of the message he said something like, "My mastery of Spanish is poor, but I wanted to apologize in Spanish to ensure you I was sincere, and that it is in fact me apologizing, from the heart" or some such drivel.
As it is, it just looks smug.

Spanish certainly isn't a ghetto language. I am currently starting the process of learning it officially at Penn State and have pushed both of my kids to take it as a major subject all 4 years of high school. The reality is if you speak both English and Spanish you will get paid more and will in many cases get the job over someone with otherwise equal credentials.
Doesn't change the fact that our country needs a base standard language that all citizens should use and that immigrants should be expected to learn even if that means government assistance in the form of classes.
