This just proves we need to abolish all wage laws and taxes on rich people. Then we can all get paid 17 bucks to work 12 hours a day, too! Jobs for everyone!

Exactly. These companies aren't taking advantage of people! They are providing them with opportunity and the American dream! We should all be wishing for the same thing! I mean, think about it, these people get their housing paid for by the company. They are fed by the company. Who could possibly want more than that?

Screw that - as long as they provide biscuits and tea, I need nothing else.

Put me on permanent 24 hour notice! Just don't forget the tea and biscuits!

I do enjoy all these posts expressing righteous indignation over the working conditions in these factories and how little money they make.

It's almost as if each and every one of you doesn't benefit enormously from such an arrangement.

I get your point. How do you stop the cycle? Stop buying corporate? How exactly do you do that? I'd LOVE to do that. I haven't figured out how though. I'm trying to do the "keep it local" thing but I'm finding it nearly impossible in many, many instances.

I'm confused. Does that mean we have to cheer it?

If I had my way China would pass laws that stop companies from abusing their workers the way they do. But I'm not the leader of China and I can't do that. I'm not sure that means I have to cheer our corporate overlords on just because I can't stop them.

The idea that corporations are going to be the conscience of the consumer and the nation is ridiculous. It will happen now and again but it will never be something to rely on.

One of the major problems with trade is that you can easily end up selling out your morality.

The only reason apple is even brought up is because of the reality distortion field steve jobs created around himself and the company.

P.S. In the case of Apple, it also isn't "enormously beneficial." All they do is assemble. The amount of value added is very small.

They could double the wages of the people there and cut their hours to only 8 per day and the cost of your ipad would go up by less than five bucks. Or Apple could keep the price the same and make 27% on top of materials costs instead of 30% on the top.

Chinese wage slaves bring down the costs of other products - like clothes, for example - much more.

You demand your government passes laws that restrict corporations from doing business with countries that allow human rights outrages and limits or restricts products created in those countries from entering yours.

Not that freaking hard. We do it all the time for "safety" reasons.

And if what you care about is the welfare of the chinese wage slaves, not all that great an idea anyhow.
