Sometimes. We have laws to discourage such things. SEC and FBI to know a couple of agencies that look out for such things.
I think part of it is the value on the things they lie, steal, and cheat. A lot of people here support those three when it comes to downloading music, GC doesn't. Some will look the other way when you cheat on your wife. To others its a mortal sin.

I believe this to be true. yes, you can get by and perhaps get by very well just on hard work and principles. But the true rewards go to snake oil sales men...

Marketing and Advertising - these things make the world go round. Public relations, paid professional liars in high regard.
Why do we build up society around what we know is an illusion?

I will add to my comments as a response to Tych's post.
Society is often built on the premise that it will fix this unfairness but any civilization is also prone to find new ways to make life unfair.
In the end there has never been a time when virtue didn't need to be its own reward.
Christianity is built upon this very concept. The Kingdom of Heaven is this place where virtue is equal to the reward.

Indeed - good point. I think the 'rewards' aren't as high, because of the size of the audience and the relative affliction of BS by the audience.
