This argument would mean that neither McCain nor Romney could run.

Minor v. Happersett was about women's suffrage and was rendered inapplicable by the Nineteenth Amendment.

if a kenyan born british national marries an american, then he too becomes an american citizen.
so obama was born to citizen parents.
or do the parents also have to be born here, now?
The argument being presented is that both parents have to be citizens in order to be "natural born".
Also, citizenship isn't automatically conferred on spouses. They can apply for it, but I'm pretty sure Barack Sr. never did so.

I don't get it.
What is the inherent value in being a "natural born citizen" in the case of an American?
Most are just 1-2 steps away from being scruffy immigrants, so it's mostly a technicality.

both parents ARE citizens. one is naturalized but still a citizen.
or are you using the term citizen to mean "someone born within the borders of the US"?

This is correct.
My wife and I have been married 9 years. She is not a US Citizen (but is here legally.)

You can apply after 5 years now I think.
Temporary Landed Alien (0 months - 1 year), Conditional Permanent Landed Alien (1 - 5 years), Permanent Landed Alien (5 years+).
Once you become a Permanent Landed Alien, you can get divorced, commit a crime, etc. and not face immediate deportation. You also no longer have to inform the government when you move.
(It could be 3 years, I seem to remember 5).
After you are a Permanent Landed Alien, you have to submit the paperwork for citizenship, attend the classes and pass the test.
