Can you imagine trying to get to level 50 in pre-TOA DAOC solo? It'd take a year at least.
Depends on class. High DPS classes could do it, at least in the time between SI and ToA. Pre-SI... well, you'd be right with at least a year

See my sig. Truth.
WoW is an MMO but not groundbreaking in any way really, just covers most bases decently.
Except PVP.

When I played DAOC back then I thought how nice it was if you could get good xp just doing quests. Then I played games where you could. And had to in fact. Turned out it's just like grinding mobs only you have to walk for 5 minutes between each pull.

Yeah, pre-SI probably would have been much worse.
I remember once when a group of us went up to Llyn Barfog and there was a pole Armsman up there soloing. I remember him telling us that he'd been there for a month and had only leveled like three times. I'm not exactly sure when it was but it would have had to be pre-SI because nobody went up there anymore once SI was released, except to kill the named spawns up there which had to be done in a group.

I did that, without a buffbot as a Champion, the only real reason why it took so long was that you had to wait to recover health.

WoW was the first (major game at least) to have leveling be mostly done via questing rather than just pure grinding. It did have some innovations we now take for granted in the genre..
Strange that one couldn't do quests all the way to max level solo in a game called "Everquest" lol

My first 50 in daoc had about 30 days played, but I solo'd until lvl 46 or so almost exclusively. Then I found out about the finns and became a bubble bot for a couple of days - ding!
