That is a LOT of presence in the gulf and would set a US naval historical precedent.

It could be completely innocent and have nothing to do with the increase in US amphibious assault troops in Kuwait and Israel, and of course nothing to do with Iran's threats re oil supply to the EU.
Al Arabiya speculates that it has more to do with Iran threatening to close the Strait of Hormuz which is a critical oil shipping channel.

Illy's been around, but this isn't really tinfoiler stuff. I doubt most Americans would believe it's about nucular weapons if we started firing rockets at Tehran. The US media would replay tapes of Ahmenmodwadjihad making stupid remarks about death to America and the game would be on and no one, not one of the media pointing out that Ahmenmodwadjihad is to the power structure in Iran as a teleprompter is to Obama.

This time the Zionist neocon war mongering media & establishment complex isn't even going to bother making an attempt at a case for war. They are just going to do it while they are in power based on the premise that it is better to beg forgiveness (plus they have the media locked up) than to ask for permission.
And the extra carriers? They probably felt that they weren't going to get away with this ploy.
