Theres a pretty big difference. A "band-aid" or "kleenex" have the same functions and no real variation. There a pretty big damn different between a mountain dew and a root beer, especially if they're both called a coke which is something else entirely.

The difference is a matter of perspective.

To me, there's almost no difference - they're all drinks meant to provide liquid intake and be refreshing and flavorful. Beyond that, it matters little.

Further, the point was that linguistically there is no difference between calling all carbonated beverages "Coke" and calling all facial tissues "Kleenex".

Southerners call all soda 'coke' because they live in a hotbed of ignorance and stupidity.

How is anyone genuinely surprised that southerners do something irrationally dumb?

I have an issue with that map. How do they represent a county if 30-50 percent call it coke, another 30-50% call it soda, and another 30-50% may call it pop?

I think this map was made to support the authors desired outcome!

I don't get the ones that call all soda Coke. Coke is a brand name. That's like calling all cars Chevy or all TVs Sony. Soda is just a shortened form of soda pop. Just as pop is. Both of those make sense.

It's actually quite common.

I'm guilty of a number of those. ^^

And it's called pop.

Boy howdy beaver cleaver, I could sure use a pop!

Seriously that word makes you sound like you're from the '50s. The idea of calling sprite, dr. pepper, or other soft drink 'coke' is even more bizarre.

How the hell would you order in a restaurant, especially in any place that wasn't the south?

Scenario 1:

Waitress: What will you have to drink?

Southerner: I'll have a coke.

*waitress brings a coke and southerner takes a sip*

Southerner: WTF IS THIS! I ordered a coke and you brought me a Coke! You should have known I meant I wanted a coke!

Scenario 2:

Waitress: What will you have to drink?

Southerner: I'll have a coke.

Waitress: I'm sorry, we only serve Pepsi products.

Southerner: Ok, I'll have a coke.

Waitress: Sir, we only serve Pepsi.

Southerner: I know, I heard you the first time, I'll have a coke.

*waitress shoots southerner in the face and serves 20 years for what should have been justifiable homicide*

That's a pretty elaborate interpretation. How about

Southerner: "I'll have a coke"
"Waitress: "We serve Pepsi, is that okay?"
Southerner" "up"

Problem solved.

When I was younger, I used "Coke" (the term, not the drug...stay with me here), probably because my mom lived in the South for many years. I've never used "Pop" and rarely used "Soda". I usually use "Soft Drink" or the brand name these days.
