I don't get the ones that call all soda Coke. Coke is a brand name. That's like calling all cars Chevy or all TVs Sony. Soda is just a shortened form of soda pop. Just as pop is. Both of those make sense.

It's actually quite common.

Yeah I still don't get it. The Coke one just makes no sense to me. It's not like that is the biggest one by a clear margin that it eclipses all others.
Most of those others on that list most people couldn't name a second brand.

I am guilty of the band-aid and Jell-o ones though.

Yeah, I don't get it either.

You could make the argument that since Coke was started in Georgia, that's why everyone calls all soda Coke, but Dr. Pepper (Texas) and Pepsi (North Carolina) were also born in the south.

Language is a funny thing sometimes.

Calling all sodas "coke" is really no different than calling all adhesive bandages "Band-Aid" or calling all facial tissues "Kleenex" or calling all brands of tampons "Tampax".

It would be interesting to see the population of those counties in the map in the OP though. I suspect that the numbers of PEOPLE vs. numbers of counties would be vastly different than it appears on the map.

Theres a pretty big difference. A "band-aid" or "kleenex" have the same functions and no real variation. There a pretty big damn different between a mountain dew and a root beer, especially if they're both called a coke which is something else entirely.
