Unemployment is a stat that only has so many uses but it resonates with the public and that is why you see it a lot.

...right up until that flood of millions has held out as long as they can and start throwing themselves at businesses as wage-slaves, dilluting your benefits and creating leverage for employers to freeze your wages for the next decade. (Or, drop you, to hire them part-time at half the cost).

Govt produces several different unemployment numbers.
none of which reflect the truth. If we were to count unemployment with the sane formula used in the 30s, 40s, and 50s, it would be 23%.
They reflect exactly what they say they do.
You just get all giddy when the number goes up.
