I think you might be aware but Foxconn is not a Chinese company. There is an unrealistic expectation of the Chinese government being omniscient and omnipotent and capable of micromanaging every single Chinese citizen and the thousands if not tens of thousands of companies starting up every year all across the country. Filter that through hearsay and other BS and I'm sure we're not getting the whole picture - Foxconn is generally not known for poor treatment of workers, but I suppose their Chinese division might be.
The simple fact is that American mass media has deliberately whitewashed the Taiwanese origin of the company out of print, which explains why so many their consumers are omitting this crucial detail.
It really doesn't matter who owns the company. What matters is that the Chinese government is willing to subsidize new factories on even the chance of it attracting new business and the fact that workers in China have little or no protection from predatory companies. I'm sure there are other countries that are just as bad as China about that kind of thing and I'm sure the right in this country would absolutely love it if it could force all workers to live in company dormitories and be at the company's beck and call 24/7.
In related news, China is spending three quarters of a trillion dollars over the next decade to ensure that they control the vast majority of green technology factories. That's one of the reasons Solyndra went bankrupt. Now, Solyndra might have had other problems. Everything written about it is from a partisan viewpoint, so it's hard to tell for sure, but, the fact is, if the U.S. government doesn't support the ability of U.S. companies in the alternative energy field, we will lose THE big economic fight of the 21st Century.
In other words, I think China is doing some things we should also be doing and some things we should take as cautionary examples.

Plus, im just laughing that DesPaulhumpervu thinks that China is more free market by that example, and forgets that the US has been helping private citizens open businesses for decades. Also, China has regulations too, many of which are similar or the same as in the US.
Plus, forcefully manipulating your own population into production leverage isn't very free market.

China's record on worker's rights is here and there, but "officially" there are laws regarding pay and maximum hours of employment. A lot of the problem is uneven enforcement which is typical of developing countries, but they have been improving steadily - as would be expected. Right wingers may salivate at the thought of paying people a few cents an hour for 16 hours a day six days a week, but they neglect to mention that China has massive subsidies for housing, healthcare, education, transport etc for the poorest people and minorities, which is why they have (or had) one the lowest wealth disparities in the world even as a poor and rapidly growing nation.
