A Florida lawmaker is pushing a bill that would ban the use of food stamps to purchase snacks and sweets, such as cookies and cakes.
Critics say the government shouldn't be telling people what to eat.
Democratic Rep. Gwyndolen Clarke-Reed, of Pompano Beach, also says the educational provision is demeaning to minorities and the poor by implying they aren't smart enough to make their own choices.

Wish they would make up their minds. Personally I prefer the - we are smart enough to make up our own minds - line of thinking.

Makes sense to me but if they try and make it so you can't get kool aid there will be riots.
WIC has very strict limits. Food stamps are relatively lax. It makes sense that Food stamps would allow less and WIC would allow more imo.

yep. I would go as far as to say they should only be allowed to eat sweets. Maybe that way they will die of quicker and get off the governments dole.

Food Stamps need to be reformed.
The things you can buy with them now make no sense.
You can't buy fried chicken because it's hot, but you can fill your cart with candy and it's fine.
If they want to buy junk food they can use their own money like they do for beer, cigarettes and hot food.

When I was on food stamps they gave me 160 per month. I ate pretty good

I think not allowing prepared food is a no brainer.

Obviously, but so should carts full of candy or other junk food.
That was kind of my point.
Hot food is off the list even though 8 pieces of fried chicken for my family would be better than a cart full of junk food which is fine under current rules.
It just doesn't make any sense.
