Some things are worth the cost. This is one of them.

We can have the same stuff at a lower cost. Is it worth more because we pay more?

i think his argument, assuming he's not trolling, is that if it is covered by insurance then manufacturers will drive the costs up - and as soon as it's not covered by insurance there will somehow be more competition and drive the prices down.

Suppose you go to the store to buy a loaf of bread and it costs you $3.00.
Now imagine if instead of just paying for it you give money in advance to a middle man. The store will give you the bread for "free" and will then file paperwork with your middle man to get reimbursed in a couple of months. You've now introduced time value of money into the equation. Additionally you've introduced paperwork. On top of that you've introduced a third party who needs to make a profit. All of these things add to the ultimate price you pay. You probably end up prepaying $4.50 per loaf of "free" bread that you receive.
$3.00 < $4.50

I still think somethings are worth the cost and should be shared by all. This is one of those things.

Its very cost effective for society to fund sex education, birth control, and possibly even abortions.
If you dont morally believe it then dont do it yourself.
