Bah. This is a CA bike. Light enough even for the Pismo dunes. Quick in traffic. Cheap! yet well made and trouble free. Had one years ago when stationed in CA. Loved it but not a long haul type of a bike. Good for a Vegas or Tahoe run though.

My last bike was a Honda Nighthawk 750. They quit makin them. When I moved I sold it for $500.00. It had about 5500 miles on it.

When it is time, I hope to buy it Feb- Mar. I ll post a pic when I buy it. I 'm going to start with the Triumph. Maybe this one http://www.triumphmotorcycles.com/motorcycles/range/roadsters/street-triple/2012/4763

Not claiming to be an expert or anything but since I went to a large motorcycle show only three weeks ago I did pick up some rather strong impressions for what makes for a really good long haul touring bike and a styling cruiser wasn't it. The high end touring bikes were definitely more utilitarian with travel cases and accessories, less flashy chrome crap, rode higher and tended to incorporate features that made them resemble the dual sport class (so that you could off road in a pinch, like a washed out road, poor road, etc).

I rode one for years but I would never do so on the So Cal freeways.

And I would NEVER ride between traffic on the freeway. Every time I see someone doing that I wonder how stupid they are....

Usually just before I see yet another car make a sudden lane change before they even THINK about looking.

Every time I am tempted to buy a bike I remember that I would rather finish life much later than 50 and with all my limbs.

Im with you on this Nanji. My greatest fear is i will push it too hard in the desert. If Im closing in on 100 mph I want to do it. I love the speed and there is no room for error at high speed. Im getting older and my reflexes are not what they used to be. This is why a 700 cc bike is probably better for me than a 1000 cc bike. I dont cut traffic. Riding in the diamond lane is a benefit though.

Aeth, Im a person who can really go light, a sleeping bag, a liteweight tent and one pair of clothes for a change. I can wear a backpack if I dont have saddlebags.
