Groucho's article pretty clearly spells out why this is awful for young gay students. Not sure why the focus is on teachers, who will for the most part be fine regardless, gay or straight. Except that that's probably a simpler angle to take in order to disregard the topic as negligible, ie. Lyken.

Discussions of whether you are gay or straight should be no more controversial that whether you rooted for the Giants or the Patriots in the Superbowl.

Yeah the idea that a kid wouldn't already know about homosexuality in middle school is hilarious but that is what this law seems to be "sheltering" these kids from. I don't see why the state would make a law trying to stop kids from learning about the existance of gay people.

The Republican party is so bad it's hard to believe they are only the 2nd worst of our major parties.

Their not... they're telling teachers it's not their job to teach sexuality. Kids can learn about the existence of gay people from parents, tv, each other, etc...

Parents wanting to control what their kids hear is as old as time. Many of the parents have probably never talked with their kids about the existance of gay people and they'd rather they never know. Because if you're a stupid anti-gay bigot chances are very high you also believe that people knowing about gay people will increase their chances to be gay.

It's not so much focusing on the teacher angle as it is focusing on Lyken's stupid defense of the teacher angle. I agree that it's worse for the students, but one of the worst parts for the students is because a teacher can't be openly gay, so it's sort of a circular argument.

No they are specifically limiting words they can use. It is still the parents job to teach the kids about this stuff whether they can say the word gay or not.
